Surfside Playhouse was the home of STAR w/teens first summer camp in 2003.
The STAR Summer Camp was a combination of training, education, painting, and fun. For our project, the Surfside Playhouse asked us to rework their lobby. The walls were pink, and there wasn't much in the way of decoration or theme.
The Surfside Playhouse allowed STAR to use the lobby for training. The teenagers spent most of the week learning the mural techniques that would be required to finish the room. These included a variety of faux finishing techniques.
The lobby of the theatre was transformed into a classroom for the training part of the program.
Teenagers at the STAR Summer Camp also got to go on a couple of fun field trips. This included a day at Richard's Paints where they learned how paints are manufactured, and another day involved a trip to Walt Disney World for a behind the scenes tour. Here they are at Scenic Planning learning more about how Walt Disney World goes about plannig and designing the mural artwork that decorates the parks.
During the Disney field trip, STAR teens got to visit the Scenic Planning department and see how the professional design and implement fantastic background scenery.
A visit to the Walt Disney World Feature Animation Studio gave the students an opportunity to learn about animation artwork and effects first hand, from real Disney animators!
The kids got a chance to take a break from studying, painting, and touring to have a little fun at Walt Disney World.
This young man is learning techniques of layering, building up simulated textures that make a flat surface appear to be something it's not.
Faux stone walls give a teenager a reason to be proud.
STAR teens learn a variety of mural painting and artistic techniques. They are often surprised to find out what they are capable of, especially if they have not done much artwork in the past.
The lobby of the theatre is slowly transformed into a meditteranean oceanside vista, complete with stone fountains and ancient, crumbling walls.
This teen is painting a room with a view.
Part of the theme of the Surfside lobby included these notional stairs and windows.
STAR artists work closely with the participants, encouraging them and instructing them in various styles and techniques.
Many murals include plants and outdoor scenery. STAR teens become well versed in painting techniques for depicting trees and plants on a large scale.
STAR participants are always welcome to come back and work on additional projects as part of the alumni program. You can tell from this smile that it's something worth doing!
For this mural, teenagers learned how to work with a limited number of colors, acheiving effects with shading and tone rather than bright contrasts.
Baroque style scenery surrounds the entrance to the theatre, creating a drastically different mood than the previous decor.
STAR volunteers are not afraid to pick up a paint brush and join in on the effort.
Part of the new decor included a real canvas awning and paint effects that created an old-time cafe facade out of the concession stand.
As the work progresses, the room starts to transform into something new. A STAR poster in the lobby fills people in on the work in progress and lets them know how they can get involved.
The dedication ceremony was well attended, and gave the teenagers a chance to show off the work that they had done and receive recognition for their efforts.
Mural sponsors and STAR staff join forces to honor the participants. Each of the kids received tickets to attend plays a the Surfside Theatre, among other things.
During the dedication ceremony, STAR participants have a chance to share what the experience was like for them.
As with all STAR projects, the teenagers are invited to sign their work.
Another fantastic STAR project completed by another group of talented teenagers!
